Testimonials/Customer LettersFire at the Office of Office Furniture USA DealerMyrtle Beach SC, May 2005 The brothers Lou and Frank Talotta are the owners of commercial interior design consultancy Talotta Contract Interiors; they also operate an Office Furniture USA franchise in conjunction with their successful firm, and it is under that banner that they supply local organizations and businesses with FireKing brand fireproof files, cabinets and safes. The Talotta brothers only recommend products that they themselves would use, and their adherence to that age-old business precept was recently reinforced on May 19th, 2005 when a fire occurred in their company’s main office space at their headquarters and warehouse location in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The fire stayed contained in a 1,800 square foot area of the facility that housed the main office space, and before burning itself out, the intense heat of the fire had burned through all the office equipment, melting everything made of plastic and essentially destroying the interior; rendering it unusable. The fire was determined to have been accidentally caused, either due to a wiring issue or an ashtray inadvertently emptied into a trash can. Lou Talotta stated, "As the Dealer Principal, with my brother Frank as the primary sales agent for the Office Furniture USA location in the area, we do a fair amount of business selling fireproof files, cabinets and safes to local businesses and individuals, and whether its designing a work space for a client or providing them with office furniture, we often preach to our customers the importance of disaster planning and proper safeguarding of vital and irreplaceable company records and documentation," commented Mr. Talotta. He continued: "With the disaster risk profile being what it is these days, businesses need to ensure high levels of fire and security protection in storage containers and spaces." Since Talotta Contract Interiors practiced what they preached, they had protected their vital company records by storing them in a 2-drawer UL-rated FireKing filing cabinet, which was located in the Accounting Manager’s office. "When we came to work the next day after the fire, the area around the FireKing was basically gutted, and we opened the FireKing file and were not at all surprised to find that the documents stored inside were in perfect condition." After contacting the insurance company and setting up temporary work spaces in the company’s showroom area, the Talotta brothers and their colleagues minimized the business interruption and were back to work within 48 hours. "All of our vital records, including current Accounts Receivables, customer lists, payroll documents and employee records were preserved and immediately put to use during the recovery and resumption of business operations." In today’s modern information age, organizations are more dependent than ever before on the vital records they accumulate. Unfortunately, basic lack of awareness leads to the destruction of many vital records, documents and media in catastrophic fires. For office supply industry and its customers, the takeaway lesson in the aftermath of a disaster like the Talotta Contract Interiors fire is clear: be proactive, and don’t ignore the risks. Use the proper UL-rated equipment for vital records protection BEFORE a business interruption occurs. |
